Challenge - Week 5 2025



Ira S Davis, son of Ira A and Jane (Clark) Davis faced immense challenges. HIs first wife, Adeline Kent, was the daughter of Silas and Naomi (Lewis) Kent. They were married about 1864. Their first daughter, Frankie Davis, was born in September 1864, followed by son, John, in 1866 and daughter, Emma, in 1869. Their daughter, Jennie was born in August 1871. Adeline was pregnant again when Jennie died in October, 1873. Ada was born in January 1874. On February 9, 1874, both mother and infant daughter died.

We can only guess at the cause of these deaths. 



But challenges still loomed for Ira Davis. He and his second wife, Carrie Hall, were married in 1878.  Clinton Gaily Davis was born in October 1879. Edward Milton Davis was born in 1881. Their daughter, Daisy Deane Davis was born June 27, 1883. 

Eddie died December 10, 1892 and Clinton died four months later, March 9, 1893.

The 1900 census looks like it says Carrie had 8 children and 1 survived. So I did additional research. The 1910 census confirms that I was led astray by bad penmanship. That is definitely a 3.


Even though Ira had challenges and grief, he must have had joys with three of his daughters and one son living to adulthood providing him with 21 grandchildren and many more descendants to the present day.

Favorite Photo - Week 2 2025

  Week 2’s theme is “Favorite Photo.” Yes, I’ve included this prompt in the last few years of 52 Ancestors, and for good reason: Photos capture our family history like few other things can. Nickname - Week 3 2025

  Week 3: I choose Frankie Davis, my great-grandmother, for the exploration of Nickname. Many people assume her name was Frances. Almost every valid account I find of her lists her as Frankie. She was born in 1864 so the first census I find her in is 1870. In 1880, apparently the census taker didn't get all the information and Frankie is listed as a son. Wat and Frankie were married Feb. 6, 1881 in Ellenburg.  From  The Plattsburgh Sentinel, 11 February 1881 The 1892 NY State census show Frankie married to Watson Merrill and they have five children. The census in 1900, shows that Frankie had had 9 children and 8 were still living. This census also lists Bess as a son.  The 1905 NY State census. Previous census records list no occupation but here it shows she took in laundry. By 1910, Frankie's two oldest daughters, Edith and Sadie, were married and living elsewhere.
